Sweaty Realisations

I’ve just finished my home training session. I’m hot and sweaty and my arms ache. But I feel pretty good.

Tyla came through when I had one round to go. I had taken my T-shirt off after round 1 because my body needed some air. I never train in just a sports bra. She gave me a disapproving look.

Correction.

She gave me a look. Which I interpreted as disapproving. Based solely on my insecurities. And on her perfect “resting B” face.

Had I gone that route and made assumptions, I would have felt like crap and probably gotten angry.

Instead I asked her, “what’s that look for?”

I braced myself for the inevitable, “where’s your shirt?” or “put some clothes on!” or “eeeeeww!” Instead I got, “I’m envious” and “You’ve got a 6 pack. Like a proper one.”

This from the teenager who struggles to pay me a compliment when I’ve put truckloads of effort into getting ready for a date.

I might still be in shock.

The reason she came through was to offer me half of her droewors. I tuned her just the other day for not thinking beyond herself. Today she thought beyond herself. Today she was kind.

If I had reacted to her look or to my interpretation of her look, I would have missed all that.

This is the power of perception. And the importance of communication – asking the questions and not making assumptions. Getting clarity before reacting irrationally.

Today we kept it simple. Today we built. Today we grew.
